Two elderly women were found dead under mysterious circumstances inside their home in central Delhi’s New Rajinder Nagar area on Thursday morning, police officials said. Preliminary investigations have found no signs of forced entry, struggle or theft at the residence, prompting authorities to examine multiple angles, including possible medical complications.
The deceased have been identified as Saroj Bala and her sister-in-law Chandra Kanta, both believed to be around 80 years old. Police said Saroj Bala was unmarried and had been living with Chandra Kanta at the house for several years. Neighbours reportedly had not seen the two women for the past few days, raising concerns after a foul smell began coming from the premises.
According to officials, a domestic help who regularly cleaned the porch area of the house alerted police around 10.30 am on Thursday after noticing the smell. The worker reportedly found all the doors locked from inside before informing authorities. A police team was immediately dispatched to the location to inspect the property.

Upon entering the house, officers discovered the bodies of the two women inside a room. One of them was lying on a bed while the other was found on the floor. Investigators suspect the deaths may have occurred at least one or two days earlier, based on the condition of the bodies and the foul smell emanating from the residence.
Police said the single-storey house has four entry points, but none showed evidence of forced access or disturbance. Officials are also examining whether the women were suffering from age-related illnesses or were living without close family support. Statements from neighbours and local residents are currently being recorded to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Authorities stated that no immediate evidence of foul play has surfaced during the preliminary inquiry. However, all possibilities, including accidental death and health-related causes, remain under investigation. Police added that further legal action will depend on the findings of the postmortem examination.
