A Delhi court sentenced two men, Navrattan alias Kale and Naushad, to life imprisonment for the 2017 abduction and murder of Om Hare, emphasizing the "serious" nature of the crime. The verdict, delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Vandana on July 4, followed their conviction last November for murder, abduction, and destroying evidence.
The court highlighted the premeditated nature of the crime, noting that the duo kidnapped and brutally killed Om Hare before disposing of his body. Additional Public Prosecutor Vineet Dahiya argued against leniency, citing the crime’s brutality. The judge underscored the need for proportionate punishment to protect society and deter criminal behavior, stating, “The criminal law adheres to the principle of proportionality in prescribing liability according to culpability.”
While the offense was deemed grave, it did not meet the “rarest of rare” threshold for the death penalty. Both convicts received simple life imprisonment under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The ruling aims to balance justice with the severity of the crime, reinforcing the court’s commitment to curbing criminal proclivity.
