The Coimbatore city police launched a major crackdown on drug syndicates, arresting seven peddlers, including the son of a woman sub-inspector, in a sweeping operation on Thursday.
The bust, aimed at curbing the flow of narcotics to IT professionals and pub-goers, netted a haul of synthetic drugs and cannabis, along with significant assets, signaling a robust push to dismantle local trafficking networks.
Police seized 36.9 grams of MDMA, 92.4 grams of cocaine, 2.6 kilograms of ganja, 1.7 kilograms of kush, Rs 25 lakh in cash, three cars, 12 mobile phones, a money-counting machine, four digital weighing scales, and 122 premium liquor bottles.
The arrested individuals include K. Manikandan, 39, a call taxi owner; S. Vinayagam, 34, a call taxi driver; V. Krishnakanth, 34, an IT employee; M. Mahavishnu, 28, a moneylender and son of Sub-Inspector Vijayalakshmi from the Economic Offences Wing; D. Adarsh, 24, a textile businessman; A. Rithesh Lamba, 41, a food businessman; and B. Rohan Shetty, 30, another textile trader.
City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said the operation followed close monitoring of pubs and drug hotspots. “The accused sourced drugs from Mumbai via couriers, targeting IT workers and nightlife crowds,” he explained.
The group, active for over a year, funneled profits into lavish lifestyles and properties, including a house under construction in Kovaipudur and land in Teachers Colony—assets now slated for seizure. On Friday, the seven were produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded in custody, as police continue tracing their supply chain.
