Four years after the mysterious murder of Seema Goyal on the Panjab University campus, police have arrested her husband, senior professor BB Goyal, as the prime suspect in a case that has relied on advanced forensic techniques. Goyal, a marketing professor at the University Business School, was taken into custody on December 8, 2025, following brain-mapping tests that allegedly revealed patterns indicating his involvement in the strangulation death of his wife on November 4, 2021.
Seema Goyal, a homemaker, was found dead on Diwali morning in their campus residence, with her hands and legs tied using cloth pieces. Initially, Goyal claimed he discovered the body around 7:30 a.m. after sleeping in a separate upstairs room, suggesting an outsider had entered, killed her, and fled. He moved the body to a hospital before alerting police, who registered a case against unknown assailants based on his statement.
Post-mortem confirmed death by strangulation, but investigations found no signs of forced entry or missing valuables, ruling out robbery. Seema's brother alleged an insider's role and approached the court to expedite the probe. Lack of direct physical evidence initially stalled progress, with an attempted narco-analysis on Goyal abandoned due to his reported asthma.

The breakthrough came from statements by the couple's daughter, who was not home that morning, providing key leads. Earlier in 2025, authorities conducted Brain Electrical Oscillation Signature (BEOS) profiling—commonly known as brain-mapping—at a facility in Rohini, Delhi. This marked the first reported use of the technology in a Chandigarh murder case.
Results reportedly showed Goyal exhibiting "deceptive" responses and "experiential knowledge" of the crime, pointing to a possible domestic dispute. Police described him as remaining largely uncooperative during questioning.
The case highlights challenges in cold murder investigations on secure campuses, with renewed focus on psychological and neuro-forensic tools. Goyal continues to be interrogated as the probe seeks to establish motive and corroborate evidence for charges.
