Five individuals were arrested early Saturday from a housing complex in New Town, near Kolkata, in connection with the murder of notorious gangster Chandan Mishra at Patna’s Paras HMRI Hospital, police confirmed. The arrests followed joint raids by Patna Police and West Bengal’s Special Task Force (STF) targeting suspects who fled Bihar after the Thursday morning attack.
Chandan Mishra, a 36-year-old Buxar resident and convicted murderer serving a life sentence, was shot dead in the hospital’s ICU while on parole for medical treatment. The assailants, identified through viral CCTV footage, included five armed men who entered Room 209, fired multiple rounds, and escaped within seconds. Four of the arrested were directly involved in the killing, with the fifth suspected as an accomplice, possibly the lookout who waited outside on a motorcycle.
Police tracked the suspects using mobile phone tower data, leading to their capture in a New Town flat. “The Bihar Police will seek transit remand to bring them to Patna,” a West Bengal police officer stated. The investigation, led by Patna SP (Central) Diksha, is probing potential security lapses at the hospital, as the unmasked gunmen evaded checks to reach the second floor. “We’re examining possible complicity in the security failure,” Diksha said.

Mishra, with over 24 criminal cases, including 12 murders, was a key figure in Bihar’s Shahabad region underworld, previously linked to rival-turned-suspect Onkarnath Singh, alias Sheru. The killing is believed to stem from a gang rivalry, with police identifying Tauseef Badshah, a known criminal familiar with the hospital’s layout, as a lead shooter.
The incident has sparked outrage, with Union Minister Chirag Paswan criticizing Bihar’s law and order under the Nitish Kumar government, citing the brazen attack as evidence of emboldened criminals. The suspects are under interrogation, and Patna Police are pursuing further leads to ensure justice in this high-profile case.
