A 21-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering a 61-year-old woman, stuffing her body into a suitcase, and dumping it in a lake on the outskirts of Bengaluru in an alleged attempt to rob her gold jewellery. Police identified the victim as Jayamma, wife of Boregowda and a resident of Challaghatta in Kengeri, who had been reported missing before her body was discovered. Authorities said a special investigation team solved the case within 24 hours of the body being recovered.
According to police, Jayamma's body was found inside a red suitcase floating in Thimmappa Lake at Ramohalli on July 21, after officers received information at around 12:33 p.m. During the investigation, Kumbalagodu Police identified the deceased and arrested the accused, Gagan R. (21), also a resident of Challaghatta. Investigators alleged that the accused strangled the woman with the intention of stealing her gold jewellery before attempting to dispose of the body to conceal the crime.
Police said the accused allegedly removed the victim's gold chain and earrings before placing her body inside a red suitcase taken from the house. He is further accused of transporting the suitcase on a motorcycle and dumping it in the lake in an effort to destroy evidence. The recovery of the body triggered an intensive investigation, with officers using multiple leads to identify both the victim and the suspect within a short span of time.
