A man has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Agra district for allegedly poisoning his mother's food after his mother-in-law reportedly made it a condition for allowing his wife to return to their matrimonial home. The incident took place in Barpura village under the Pidhaura area and has prompted a police investigation. Authorities have also launched a search operation to trace the accused's mother-in-law, who is alleged to have instigated the crime.
According to police, the accused, identified as Ravindra, had been involved in a land dispute with his younger brother, Mukesh. Amid the ongoing family conflict, Ravindra's wife left their home and went to stay with her parents. When Ravindra later visited his in-laws' residence to persuade his wife to return, his mother-in-law allegedly imposed a shocking condition before agreeing to send her daughter back.
Investigators said the woman allegedly instructed Ravindra to "get rid of" his mother and specifically told him to poison her food. Police allege that Ravindra accepted the condition and returned home, where he mixed poison into a chickpea dish before serving it to his mother. Shortly after consuming the meal, the elderly woman reportedly fell seriously ill, raising alarm among other family members.

The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment. Her present medical condition has not been officially disclosed. After receiving information about the suspected poisoning, local police reached the village, examined the scene, and began collecting evidence as part of their investigation into the incident.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajiv Ranjan confirmed that Ravindra has been taken into custody in connection with the alleged offence. He also stated that police teams are conducting raids to arrest the accused's mother-in-law, identified as Phoolvati, for her alleged role in instigating the crime. Authorities are continuing to question those connected to the case to establish the sequence of events and gather additional evidence.
The incident has drawn attention due to the alleged motive behind the crime and the disturbing family circumstances surrounding it. Police have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings. Officials are also examining the broader background of the family dispute, including the reported property conflict, to determine whether it contributed to the alleged conspiracy that led to the poisoning.
