Operations of Karnataka’s state-run bus services remained largely unaffected on Thursday, even as transport workers held the “Bengaluru Chalo” protest in Bengaluru. The demonstration, organised by the Joint Action Committee representing six transport unions, highlighted long-pending demands related to salary arrears, wage revision, and service conditions.
The protest, held at Freedom Park from 10 am to 4 pm, saw union leaders warn of a potential statewide strike starting Friday if the government failed to provide formal assurances regarding full settlement of dues. A hunger strike has also been scheduled for March 2, though workers at the protest expressed frustration at the committee’s announcements.
Vijay Bhaksar, leader of the Transport Workers Union, said the protest was essential due to government inaction. “With the government neglecting the workers’ demand, this protest has become necessary,” he stated, underlining the unions’ readiness to escalate if negotiations stall.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation, and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation collectively operate thousands of buses, connecting cities, towns, and rural areas across the state. These services are considered the lifeline of Karnataka.
The unions have been demanding payment of Rs 1,785 crore covering 38 months of arrears from January 2020 to February 2023, along with a 25% salary hike effective January 2024. The Karnataka government recently sanctioned Rs 1,271.92 crore to clear 26 months of pending dues, while discussions on salary revision are expected to begin from April 2025.
Despite the protest, bus operations were largely maintained. According to KSRTC, out of 12,458 scheduled departures, 11,987 services operated, reflecting a 96.22% operational rate. Including additional services, the total operations rose to 12,650, effectively surpassing 100% of scheduled runs, ensuring minimal disruption for commuters.
