Delhi Police arrested a 43-year-old autorickshaw driver, Manoj Gupta alias Chawal, at Rajiv Chowk metro station on July 24, 2025, for his involvement in multiple mobile phone thefts. Three high-end stolen phones—two iPhones and a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra—were recovered from his possession, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Kushal Pal Singh announced on July 25.
Gupta was apprehended during a joint patrol by the Rajiv Chowk Metro police and Special Staff on the Blue Line, where he was seen loitering suspiciously. “He failed to explain the possession of the expensive phones,” Singh said. Investigations linked one phone to a theft case reported on July 9 at Rajiv Chowk, and the others to cases from July 10. Gupta was also wanted in a March 2025 theft case involving his associate Asif Pathan alias Sheru, and two additional cases at Azadpur Metro police station.
With a criminal record spanning at least 30 cases, including theft and Arms Act violations across Delhi, Gupta is a habitual offender. Police suspect he targeted commuters at busy metro stations, exploiting crowded areas for pickpocketing. The arrests align with ongoing efforts to curb mobile thefts, with Delhi Police recovering 1,619 stolen phones worth Rs 55 lakh in 2016 alone. Further investigations are underway to uncover potential accomplices and additional stolen items.
