Assam police have struck a major blow against drug trafficking, arresting two suspected peddlers and seizing contraband valued at over Rs 2.5 crore in two separate operations, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced. The raids, conducted in Cachar and Sribhumi districts, underscore the state’s aggressive campaign to curb the illegal drug trade, with authorities vowing to maintain a zero-tolerance stance.
In the first operation, Cachar police confiscated 410 grams of heroin, estimated to be worth Rs 2.5 crore on the black market, and apprehended one peddler. The seizure disrupts a significant supply chain in the region, known for its proximity to trafficking routes. In a parallel raid, Sribhumi police seized 630 bottles of cough syrup, commonly abused as a narcotic, and arrested another suspect. “Twice Struck, Twice Stopped,” Sarma posted on X Thursday evening, praising the police efforts.
The operations reflect Assam’s intensified crackdown on narcotics, driven by the state’s #AssamAgainstDrugs campaign. “@assampolice stands united with one goal,” Sarma declared, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eradicating drug-related crime. The seizures come amid rising concerns over the spread of illegal drugs in Northeast India, with authorities linking such activities to organized crime networks exploiting the region’s porous borders.

Police are interrogating the arrested peddlers to uncover potential links to larger trafficking syndicates. The raids have been lauded by local communities, who see them as a step toward safer neighborhoods. As Assam continues its fight against drugs, officials are urging citizens to report suspicious activities, reinforcing the state’s resolve to dismantle drug networks and protect public safety.
