Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mizoram’s first-ever railway line and flagged off its maiden Rajdhani Express, connecting Aizawl to Delhi, marking a historic entry onto India’s railway map. The development, celebrated as a game-changer for the Northeast, is part of an ambitious Rs 77,000 crore investment in railway projects across the region, announced Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday.
The newly launched railway line, a technical marvel, showcases engineering excellence, navigating the challenging terrain of Mizoram’s hilly landscape. Chief Minister Lalduhoma, addressing a jubilant gathering in Aizawl, hailed the occasion as a “historic day” for the state, emphasizing the transformative potential of this long-awaited connectivity. “This railway line is not just a track; it’s a bridge to opportunity, progress, and prosperity,” he declared, crediting the central government’s commitment to regional development.
Vaishnaw highlighted the broader impact of the railway projects, stating that enhanced connectivity will unlock Mizoram’s potential as a tourism hotspot, create new employment opportunities, and open up markets for the state’s unique products, such as handicrafts, agricultural goods, and traditional textiles. “The Northeast’s development is a cornerstone of the Prime Minister’s Act East policy, and these projects are a testament to that vision,” he said, underscoring the strategic importance of integrating the region into India’s economic and infrastructural framework.

The Aizawl-Delhi Rajdhani Express, a flagship train known for its speed and comfort, is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mizoram and the national capital, fostering stronger economic and cultural ties. For residents, the railway promises easier access to markets and opportunities beyond the state’s borders, while tourists will find Mizoram’s pristine landscapes, vibrant culture, and biodiversity more accessible than ever before.
The railway line’s completion is a feat of engineering, overcoming the region’s rugged topography and logistical challenges. It represents a significant step toward addressing the Northeast’s historical connectivity gaps, which have long hindered economic growth. The Rs 77,000 crore investment in railway infrastructure across the region includes multiple projects aimed at improving connectivity, modernizing stations, and introducing high-speed trains, positioning the Northeast as a vital hub in India’s growth story.
Local residents expressed excitement over the development, with many anticipating a boost to small businesses and tourism-related enterprises. “This railway will bring the world to Mizoram and take Mizoram to the world,” said Lalnunmawia, a local entrepreneur. “Our products can now reach bigger markets, and visitors will come to explore our beautiful state.”
The inauguration comes as part of a broader push to integrate the Northeast into India’s mainstream development narrative. The Act East policy, championed by the Prime Minister, has prioritized infrastructure, connectivity, and economic empowerment in the region, with railways playing a pivotal role. Vaishnaw noted that the ongoing projects will not only benefit Mizoram but also enhance connectivity across neighboring states, creating a ripple effect of growth and opportunity.
As Mizoram celebrates this milestone, the state looks forward to a future of enhanced connectivity, economic prosperity, and greater integration with the rest of India. The railway line stands as a symbol of progress, promising to reshape the region’s socio-economic landscape for generations to come.
