At least seven people were killed and more than 80 others injured after two trains collided near Jakarta overnight, triggering a large-scale rescue and recovery operation on Tuesday. Emergency responders rushed to the crash site in Bekasi, where damaged rail coaches and twisted debris complicated efforts to reach trapped passengers.
Officials said rescue teams were working urgently to save two people believed to be alive under the wreckage during the early hours after the collision. Medical teams, police personnel and railway authorities were deployed to assist survivors, clear debris and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities said the death toll could change as operations continued.
Anna Purba, spokesperson for rail company KAI, said at least 81 people were injured in the incident. Many passengers were treated for fractures, cuts and trauma sustained during the crash. Witnesses described scenes of panic as passengers tried to escape damaged compartments following the impact. Emergency services also established temporary assistance points for families seeking information about victims.

According to Franoto Wibowo, another spokesperson for the state-owned rail operator, the accident may have been triggered when a taxi reportedly clipped a commuter train at a level crossing, forcing it to stop abruptly on the tracks. A second train travelling behind then crashed into the halted train. Investigators are expected to examine signalling systems, crossing safety procedures and train operations to determine the exact cause of the collision. The crash has renewed concerns over rail safety and level-crossing management in Indonesia’s densely populated urban corridors.
