The Delhi Lakshmi Yojana has received a strong response from women across the national capital, with more than 2.65 lakh women registering for the scheme and 52,175 submitting their final applications by Tuesday afternoon, according to officials. The initiative, launched by the Delhi government, aims to provide monthly financial assistance to eligible women while promoting greater economic independence and financial security.
Officials said that by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, around 2.38 lakh women had registered under the scheme, with 38,076 completing their final applications. The number increased significantly within a few hours, reflecting growing interest among beneficiaries. Under the scheme, eligible women will receive financial support of Rs 2,500 every month, with the government expecting the programme to benefit nearly 17 lakh women over its initial three-year implementation period.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the scheme has been designed not only as a direct financial assistance programme but also as a step towards strengthening savings habits, digital financial inclusion and social security for women. She described the initiative as a model focused on long-term financial stability and women’s empowerment rather than only providing immediate monetary support.

The scheme was officially launched on Saturday, along with the inauguration of the online registration portal. Within 12 hours of the portal becoming operational, more than 33,730 registrations were recorded, while 1,940 women submitted their final applications. The Chief Minister said the programme was initially approved by the Delhi Cabinet as the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana but was renamed Delhi Lakshmi Yojana to better represent its broader objectives of dignity, prosperity and empowerment.
According to the government, beneficiaries will have two financial options under the scheme. In the first option, Rs 1,000 per month will be transferred to a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) wallet for daily household expenses, while Rs 1,500 will be deposited into a recurring deposit or fixed deposit account. The second option allows the entire Rs 2,500 monthly assistance to be deposited into an RD or FD account, helping women build savings along with interest over time.
The Chief Minister said safeguards will also be introduced through a digital negative list for the CBDC wallet to ensure that the assistance is used for essential needs. The wallet funds will not be permitted for purchasing alcohol, tobacco products, narcotic substances, lottery tickets, gambling, betting or other restricted goods and services. The Delhi government said the measure is intended to ensure that financial support reaches families in a meaningful and responsible manner.
