The United States will send a delegation to India from June 1 to 4 to advance negotiations on an interim trade agreement and push forward discussions under the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), a government official said on Wednesday. The visit is aimed at finalising key details of the interim pact, which focuses on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade between the two countries.
The discussions are expected to cover a wide range of issues, including market access, non-tariff barriers, customs procedures, trade facilitation, investment promotion, and economic security alignment.India and the US had earlier issued a joint statement on February 7, outlining a framework for the interim agreement and reaffirming their commitment to a comprehensive bilateral trade pact. The framework laid the foundation for structured negotiations aimed at deepening economic ties and reducing friction in trade and regulatory processes.
Following that announcement, Indian officials visited Washington DC between April 20 and 23, 2026, for an in-person round of discussions with their US counterparts. Those talks focused on narrowing differences and identifying priority areas for cooperation under the proposed agreement. The upcoming visit by the US delegation, led by its Chief Negotiator, is expected to build on the progress made in previous rounds.

Officials said the objective is to move closer to a mutually acceptable interim framework while keeping momentum alive for the broader BTA negotiations. The India-US trade dialogue has gained renewed importance amid shifting global supply chains and efforts by both countries to strengthen economic resilience.
The proposed agreement is also expected to support greater investment flows and improve predictability in trade relations between the two largest democracies. Negotiators are likely to continue intensive discussions during the four-day visit, with both sides aiming to bridge gaps on sensitive issues while expanding cooperation in key sectors of mutual interest.
