Apple CEO Tim Cook, who turned 65 in November 2025, may be preparing to step down from his role, according to recent reports. Sources suggest Cook has informed senior executives that he wishes to reduce his workload and focus on a quieter pace of life, potentially moving into the role of Apple’s board Chairman.
The New York Times reported that Apple’s succession planning has been underway since late 2025. While the company is unlikely to hire an external CEO, Cook has reportedly been preparing internal candidates to take over the reins, ensuring a smooth leadership transition.
Among the top internal candidates are Senior Vice Presidents Craig Federighi (Software Engineering), Eddy Cue (Services), Greg Joswiak (Worldwide Marketing), and Deirdre O’Brien (Retail and People). However, John Ternus, Apple’s Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, is reportedly the frontrunner to succeed Cook.

Ternus, who joined Apple’s Product Design team in 2001 and became Senior VP in 2013, has overseen the hardware development of flagship products including iPhone, iPad, and AirPods. He is also credited with leading Apple’s transition to Apple silicon for Mac devices.
In addition, Ternus played a key role in Apple’s strategy of differentiating iPhone Pro models from standard models, starting with the iPhone 11 Pro in 2019, making the Pro versions feature-rich and premium-priced. His experience in product strategy and hardware engineering positions him as a strong contender to lead Apple.
The final decision on Cook’s successor will rest with Apple’s board of directors, on which Cook himself serves. Analysts say the leadership change, if it occurs, will mark a significant milestone for the tech giant and could shape Apple’s strategy for years to come.
