The Tata Group has reportedly begun the search for a new Chief for Air India, as the tenure of current CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson is set to end in 2027, sources familiar with the matter said. The group is also looking to appoint a new Managing Director for its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, as Aloke Singh approaches the end of his term.
A source close to the development noted that neither Wilson nor the Tata Group intends to renew the current contract beyond 2027, making it necessary to identify a suitable successor for the top post at Air India. Officials emphasized that the selection process could take three to six months, and any potential overlap between outgoing and incoming executives would facilitate a smoother transition.
Wilson, who assumed charge as CEO and MD in July 2022, was appointed after former Turkish Airlines Chairman Ilker Ayci opted out of the position in March 2022 amid controversy. The appointment came after the Tata Group acquired Air India from the government in January 2022, marking a major milestone in the airline’s privatization.

The group has not issued any official statement regarding the search for new leadership. However, sources confirmed that Wilson was present at Tata House on Monday for a scheduled meeting, reflecting ongoing strategic discussions within the airline.
This leadership reshuffle comes at a critical time for Air India, with the final report on the Boeing 787-8 crash at Ahmedabad expected around June. Industry analysts suggest that appointing experienced leaders will be key to strengthening operational and safety protocols across the airline group.
Air India Express, the low-cost arm, will also see a transition in management, ensuring that both full-service and budget segments remain aligned with Tata Group’s strategic vision. The move highlights the group’s long-term focus on consolidating and expanding its presence in the aviation sector.
