SpiceJet shares surged 10% on Wednesday after the budget airline announced plans to expand its fleet by inducting three Airbus A320 aircraft on a damp lease, signalling renewed momentum in its expansion strategy. The stock climbed to an intraday high of ₹12.32 following the announcement, reflecting positive investor sentiment over the carrier's efforts to strengthen operations. According to the airline, all three Airbus A320 aircraft have already arrived in India and are expected to begin commercial operations later this week.
The additional aircraft are intended to support SpiceJet's network expansion plans and help meet growing passenger demand across its domestic and international routes. In a statement, the airline said the latest induction marks another step in rebuilding its fleet and improving operational capacity. SpiceJet added that it is in advanced discussions with several aircraft lessors to bring in more planes over the coming months, suggesting that the three Airbus A320s are likely to be the first phase of a broader fleet expansion programme.
A damp lease arrangement typically involves leasing an aircraft along with maintenance services and insurance, while the airline provides its own crew for operations. Such agreements allow carriers to quickly increase capacity without making long-term aircraft purchases, particularly during periods of rising travel demand.
The fleet expansion comes as India's aviation sector continues to witness strong passenger growth, with airlines increasing capacity to cater to higher demand during the ongoing travel season. SpiceJet has been working to stabilise its operations after facing financial challenges and aircraft availability issues over the past few years.

Industry observers view the addition of more aircraft as a positive development for the airline, enabling it to improve schedule reliability, restore suspended routes and introduce new services where demand exists. The planned induction of additional leased aircraft could further strengthen the carrier's competitive position in the domestic aviation market.
Investor confidence appeared to improve following the announcement, with SpiceJet shares rising sharply during the trading session. Market participants interpreted the fleet expansion as a sign that the airline is making progress in executing its operational recovery plans.
The company has not yet disclosed details regarding the specific routes the newly inducted aircraft will serve. However, the additional capacity is expected to support both network growth and improved operational efficiency as SpiceJet seeks to capitalise on increasing air travel demand in India.
With discussions underway to induct more aircraft in the coming months, SpiceJet's latest move signals its intent to accelerate expansion and reinforce its presence in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets. The airline's future performance will depend on its ability to successfully integrate the new aircraft, maintain operational stability and manage costs amid a competitive industry environment.
