The Assam government on Tuesday announced an interim increase of ₹30 in the daily wages of tea garden workers, with the revised rates to take effect from April 1, according to an official notification issued on March 7. The hike applies to workers employed in both estate tea gardens and small tea gardens across the state, which remains India’s largest tea-producing region.
The decision follows the recommendation of the Minimum Wages Advisory Board during its meeting on February 26 and received approval from the Governor of Assam. The notification confirmed that the wage revision is part of ongoing efforts to ensure fair remuneration for plantation workers.
Under the new rates, workers in the Brahmaputra Valley will earn ₹280 per day, up from ₹250, while those in the Barak Valley will receive ₹258, an increase from ₹228. The hike applies uniformly to small tea garden workers in both regions, ensuring broader coverage across Assam’s tea industry.

The previous revision took place in October 2023, when daily wages were raised by ₹18. This latest increase was approved by the state Cabinet following a tripartite meeting that included the government, tea garden labour unions, and tea garden owners to discuss wage adjustments.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that further revisions could follow as the new labour reforms introduced by the Centre are implemented. He suggested that additional discussions among stakeholders could occur within the next six months, with the potential for daily wages to eventually exceed ₹300.
The wage hike is expected to benefit thousands of tea garden workers, strengthening their financial security and reflecting the state government’s commitment to supporting labourers in Assam’s key economic sector.
