A health challenge at Zerodha has gained widespread attention after co-founder Nithin Kamath revealed that he lost a fitness bet worth Rs 2.5 lakh to an employee who successfully shed 30 kilograms over the course of a year. Kamath shared the story on social media, saying he was pleased to lose the wager because of the positive health outcome achieved by the employee.
The employee, Rohit Agarwala, disclosed that he had reduced his weight from 104 kilograms in April 2025 to 75 kilograms by January 2026. While acknowledging the financial reward, Agarwala said the real benefit was the motivation to focus on his health and transform his lifestyle. He described the challenge as one of the most rewarding experiences of his life and credited the initiative for helping him remain committed to his fitness goals.
In a social media post, Agarwala also spoke openly about his long-standing body image concerns. He said unrealistic beauty standards on the internet often create pressure and make fitness journeys more challenging. By sharing his transformation publicly, he hoped to encourage others who may be struggling with similar issues and inspire them to take positive steps toward improving their health and confidence.

Medical experts say the achievement highlights the importance of sustainable weight loss rather than rapid results. According to Dr. Amit Saraf, Director of Internal Medicine at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, losing 30 kilograms over a year reflects consistency and healthy lifestyle changes rather than extreme dieting. He noted that gradual weight loss allows the body to adapt more effectively and is generally easier to maintain in the long term.
Dr. Saraf explained that a reduction of approximately 0.5 to 1 kilogram per week is widely regarded as a healthy and sustainable target. Such an approach can improve blood sugar control, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, sleep quality, joint health and overall energy. In contrast, aggressive weight-loss methods may result in muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies and eventual weight regain once the restrictive measures are discontinued.
The story has also sparked discussion about the role of incentives in promoting healthier habits. Experts believe that challenges, rewards and friendly competition can provide the initial motivation many people need to begin their fitness journey.
