BEML Limited, a titan in India’s rail and defence sectors, has landed a Rs 405 crore order from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to supply seven additional metro trainsets—42 cars—for the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2, the company revealed Friday.
This bumps the total trainsets under BEML’s contract from 53 (318 cars) to 60 (360 cars), cementing its pivotal role in the city’s transit overhaul.
Crafted entirely by BEML’s Bengaluru-based engineers, these driverless, six-car trainsets boast high-tensile stainless steel bodies for durability, safety, and comfort. Each car features dual roof-mounted air conditioners, an IP-based Passenger Announcement and Information System (PA/PIS), and a Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS) for real-time updates and security.
Add in LCD dynamic route maps and automated doors synced with platform screens, and these trains promise a next-level ride. “This order reinforces our commitment to world-class, indigenous solutions under AatmaNirbhar Bharat,” said Shantanu Roy, BEML’s Chairman and Managing Director.
The deal builds on BEML’s August 2023 contract worth Rs 3,177 crore, which covered design, manufacturing, and 15 years of maintenance for the initial 53 trainsets, won against stiff global competition.
This extension under contract 5RS-DM aligns with Phases 2, 2A, and 2B of Bengaluru’s metro expansion, easing the city’s traffic crunch. With facilities in Bengaluru, Kolar Gold Fields, Mysore, and Palakkad, BEML’s latest haul—announced alongside a Rs 405 crore tag in a separate statement—underscores its dominance in India’s metro manufacturing, blending innovation with national pride. Deliveries are set to roll out over the coming years.
