A massive fire broke out at the Gamdevi market complex near Thane railway station early Thursday morning, killing a firefighter and a security guard while injuring two other fire personnel. Officials said the blaze erupted around 3.45 am and rapidly spread across the crowded market area, prompting authorities to declare a “brigade call,” a situation that requires the deployment of maximum firefighting resources. The incident triggered panic among nearby residents and commuters as towering flames and thick smoke engulfed the market complex.

According to police and disaster management officials, the fire destroyed large sections of the market, which housed clothing stalls, vegetable and fruit vendors, and a local municipal ward office. Authorities stated that the densely packed structures and the presence of highly combustible materials, particularly garments stored inside shops, allowed the flames to spread quickly across the complex. Eyewitnesses reported seeing intense flames rising above the market area as emergency teams rushed to contain the situation before the fire could spread to nearby buildings.

Additional Commissioner of Police Prashant Rode confirmed that a firefighter and a security guard lost their lives during the rescue and firefighting operation. Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Yasin Tadvi said two other fire personnel sustained injuries while battling the blaze and were provided medical assistance. Officials have not yet released detailed information regarding the identities of the deceased or the condition of the injured personnel as firefighting and rescue operations continued through the morning.

Fire officials stated that teams from across Thane City were mobilized immediately after the emergency call was received. Multiple fire engines, disaster response units, and municipal authorities were pressed into service to control the blaze and prevent further damage. Rescue teams faced considerable challenges due to the intensity of the flames, narrow access routes within the market, and the large quantity of flammable stock stored inside several commercial stalls. Thick smoke also reduced visibility and complicated rescue efforts during the operation.

Authorities said the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and a detailed investigation will be launched once the site is fully secured. Preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have spread rapidly because of closely packed temporary structures and combustible inventory present in the market area. Officials are expected to examine electrical systems, storage practices, and other possible factors that could have triggered the blaze during the early morning hours.

The incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety standards and emergency preparedness in crowded urban market zones across Maharashtra. Local residents and traders gathered near the affected area as emergency personnel continued cooling operations and debris clearance. Officials said further assessments regarding property damage and structural safety would be conducted after the fire is completely extinguished and the area is declared secure for inspection teams.
