At least 24 people have been killed after a Russian missile struck a residential apartment building in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials and emergency services. The attack is being described as one of the deadliest strikes on the Ukrainian capital in recent months, as Russia intensified its aerial assault campaign involving missiles and drones.
The missile reportedly hit a multi-storey apartment block, causing extensive structural damage and triggering fires that engulfed parts of the building. Rescue teams worked through the debris for hours, searching for survivors and recovering victims from the rubble. Officials confirmed that several others were injured, though the final casualty count may still rise as operations continue.
The strike came amid what Ukrainian authorities have called one of the largest coordinated Russian aerial attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Multiple regions across Ukraine were reportedly targeted overnight, with air defence systems engaged to intercept incoming missiles and drones. Residential areas, including those in the capital, were among the hardest hit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, visiting the site of the destroyed building and calling for stronger international support to bolster Ukraine’s air defences. He said the strike underscored Russia’s continued targeting of civilian infrastructure despite ongoing global calls for restraint and negotiations.
Emergency services in Kyiv declared a period of mourning as residents gathered near the site, laying flowers and photographs in memory of those killed. Local authorities have warned that search and rescue operations will continue until all people potentially trapped under the debris are accounted for.
The attack has further escalated tensions in the ongoing war, reinforcing concerns about civilian safety and the increasing scale of aerial warfare. International reactions are expected to follow as investigations continue into the circumstances and impact of the strike.
