A fitness centre in Kerala's Palakkad district has sparked widespread debate after announcing plans to transform itself into what it described as the state's first "Islam-friendly gym". The proposal, which was initially shared through an Instagram account linked to 'Nawaz Muthu T', outlined a series of operational changes based on Islamic guidelines. The announcement has since been deleted following intense discussion on social media.
According to the now-removed post, the gym, which has reportedly been operating for around 15 years, planned to introduce several new rules for members. These included a complete ban on music within the facility, separate workout timings for men and women, and a dress code requiring members to ensure that parts of the body regarded as 'awrah' under Islamic teachings remain covered while exercising.
The proposed guidelines also stated that men and women would not be permitted to work out together. Instead, separate schedules would be arranged to maintain gender segregation within the facility. Women members would be expected to wear clothing, including a hijab, that complies with the religious requirements outlined by the gym management. The operators presented the move as an effort to create a fitness environment aligned with the preferences of members seeking faith-based facilities.

The announcement quickly attracted attention online, generating a mix of support and criticism. Supporters argued that specialised fitness spaces catering to religious beliefs offer individuals greater comfort and accessibility, while critics questioned the implications of such restrictions and whether they align with broader social norms. The removal of the original promotional video did little to slow the ongoing public discussion.
Details regarding the gym owner's background and the timeline for implementing the proposed changes remain unclear. Some observers have also raised questions about the long-term scope of the initiative and whether the facility's activities will remain focused solely on fitness. The controversy has reignited a broader debate over the emergence of religiously or culturally tailored public spaces in India and their place within an increasingly diverse society.
