India’s domestic aviation sector recorded steady growth in May, with passenger traffic rising year-on-year and IndiGo maintaining its dominance in both market share and flight punctuality, according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Domestic airlines carried around 1.53 crore passengers during the month, marking a 1.21% increase compared with the same period last year.
IndiGo continued to remain the country’s largest airline, holding a commanding 64.9% share of the domestic aviation market. The airline transported 99.91 lakh passengers in May, further strengthening its position as the leading carrier in India’s rapidly expanding air travel sector. The airline also achieved the highest on-time performance among domestic operators, recording an OTP of 82.8%.
The Air India Group retained the second position in the market, accounting for 25.6% of domestic passenger traffic. The group carried 39.33 lakh passengers during the month, maintaining a significant presence in India’s aviation industry. Meanwhile, Akasa Air continued its growth trajectory by capturing a 5.8% market share after flying 7.95 lakh passengers in May.

However, SpiceJet witnessed a decline in its market position, with its share falling below the 3% mark. The airline accounted for 2.5% of domestic traffic and carried 3.86 lakh passengers during the month. The figures indicate increasing competition among airlines as carriers focus on expanding networks and improving operational efficiency.
The DGCA data also showed significant differences in flight punctuality levels among airlines. After IndiGo’s leading OTP performance of 82.8%, Akasa Air ranked second with 78.3%, followed by the Air India Group at 74.5%. Alliance Air recorded an on-time performance rate of 70.5% during the period.
SpiceJet recorded the lowest punctuality rate among major domestic airlines, with an OTP of 26.5% in May. The data highlights the importance of operational reliability as Indian airlines compete for passenger preference in a growing aviation market. With rising demand for air travel, carriers are focusing on improving efficiency, expanding capacity, and maintaining service quality.
