India’s defence exports have climbed to an all‑time high of ₹38,424 crore (approximately US $4.1 billion) in the financial year 2025–26, marking a substantial 62 per cent year‑on‑year increase and underscoring New Delhi’s expanding footprint in the global arms market. The surge reflects stronger global demand for Indian‑made military systems and the success of policies aimed at boosting indigenous defence manufacturing.
According to data from the Ministry of Defence, both state‑run and private sector firms have played significant roles in this growth. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) contributed about 54.8 per cent of exports, while private companies accounted for 45.2 per cent of the total. This balanced contribution highlights the collaborative nature of India’s defence export ecosystem.
India now exports defence equipment to over 80 countries, with the number of authorised exporters rising as the sector integrates more deeply into international supply chains. The increase in global buyers signals rising confidence in India’s defence technology and manufacturing capabilities.

The range of exported products is broad and diverse. It includes arms, ammunition and fuses, along with complete weapon systems such as artillery guns, radars, air defence missiles, armoured vehicles and aircraft platforms that showcase Indigenous design and production strength. India’s export portfolio also reflects growing private‑sector participation in high‑value defence systems.
Major importers of Indian defence equipment span multiple regions, including countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Buyers have been attracted to cost‑effective solutions and increasing interoperability with global systems, particularly in areas such as ammunition, small arms and transport platforms. Major markets include the United States and France, among others, as Indian manufacturers expand their reach into traditional Western defence markets.
Officials and industry experts say this record performance reflects years of policy reforms aimed at simplifying export procedures, encouraging private participation, and enhancing quality standards. The government has set ambitious targets for further growth, aiming to continue scaling defence exports as part of broader efforts to position India as a major global defence supplier.
