Turmeric prices are nearing ₹19,000 a quintal in Erode amid a decline in arrivals, bringing cheer to farmers in the region. Finger turmeric was being sold at ₹18,850 a quintal at the regulated market in Erode on Tuesday, reflecting the firm prices recorded amid reduced arrivals. The increase has provided some relief to turmeric growers as they receive better prices for their produce at a time when market supplies have declined.
Turmeric produced in Erode and neighbouring districts is marketed through auctions conducted at several regulated markets and agricultural producers’ cooperative marketing societies in the region. These auction centres play an important role in bringing farmers and traders together and determining prices based on the availability and demand for turmeric. The current movement in prices has attracted attention among growers as arrivals have fallen and rates have moved closer to the ₹19,000-a-quintal level.
Auctions for turmeric are conducted at the regulated markets in Karumandichellipalayam and Semmampalayam near Perundurai. Turmeric is also auctioned through the Erode Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Society and the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Society. These centres serve as key points for the sale of turmeric brought in from Erode and surrounding areas, with traders participating in the auctions to procure the commodity.

The auctions at these centres are generally held from Monday to Friday, except on government holidays. Farmers bring their produce to the designated markets, where the turmeric is offered for sale through the established auction system. The volume of produce arriving at the markets can influence the availability of turmeric for traders and consequently affect price movements. The recent decline in arrivals has coincided with the rise in prices reported in the Erode market.
In addition to the auction centres around Erode and Perundurai, the regulated markets at Chithode and Thalavadi also conduct turmeric auctions. These markets attract traders from within Tamil Nadu as well as from outside the State, expanding the trading network for turmeric produced in the region. The participation of traders from different areas provides farmers with access to a wider market for their produce and contributes to the movement of turmeric through the region’s established agricultural trade channels.
With finger turmeric reaching ₹18,850 a quintal at the regulated market in Erode on Tuesday, prices are now close to the ₹19,000 mark. The higher rates have brought some cheer to farmers amid the reduction in arrivals, although prices in agricultural markets can change depending on supplies and trading conditions. Erode and its surrounding markets continue to remain important centres for turmeric auctions, with regular participation from traders within and outside Tamil Nadu.
