HCL Technologies (HCLTech) has appointed Amitabh Kant, India’s former G20 Sherpa, as an independent director effective September 8, 2025, for a five-year term, as announced in a statutory filing.
The decision, approved by the Board and recommended by the Nomination and Remuneration Committee, aims to leverage Kant’s extensive public policy expertise to shape HCLTech’s growth strategy. Kant, 69, brings a 45-year career in governance, having served as CEO of NITI Aayog from 2016 to 2022, where he spearheaded the Aspirational Districts Program to uplift underdeveloped regions.
As G20 Sherpa during India’s 2022-23 presidency, he secured the unanimous New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, advancing global consensus on digital infrastructure, climate finance, and geopolitics. His earlier roles include Secretary of Tourism in Kerala, where he launched the iconic ‘God’s Own Country’ campaign, and head of the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion, driving initiatives like Make in India and Startup India.

The appointment, subject to shareholder approval via postal ballot, positions HCLTech to capitalize on Kant’s vision as it navigates the evolving IT landscape.
