Delhi Police has established a specialised bomb threat (e-mail) investigation cell at its headquarters in response to a sharp rise in hoax bomb threats received across the national capital over the past year. The dedicated unit has been created to strengthen the police response to threatening emails targeting sensitive public locations, including schools, hospitals, courts, and the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to police officials, the increasing frequency of such threats exposed the need for a centralised and technically advanced mechanism capable of analysing, tracking, and investigating suspicious emails more efficiently. Authorities said the newly formed unit will serve as the main repository for all bomb threat emails reported from different districts across Delhi, allowing investigators to coordinate information and avoid duplication in separate investigations.
Officials familiar with the development said the investigation cell will maintain a consolidated database containing copies of threat emails, technical metadata, digital evidence, and details of First Information Reports registered in such cases. The database is expected to help investigators identify recurring patterns, email origins, digital footprints, and possible connections between multiple incidents reported in different parts of the city over time.

The move comes after Delhi witnessed repeated bomb scare incidents in recent months, many of which triggered emergency evacuations and large-scale security checks despite later being declared hoaxes. Educational institutions, hospitals, transport hubs, and government buildings have frequently been targeted through anonymous emails warning of explosives or potential attacks, creating panic among the public and stretching police and emergency response resources.
Police sources said the specialised cell will work closely with cyber experts, intelligence agencies, and technical surveillance teams to improve tracing capabilities and speed up investigations. Authorities are also expected to use advanced digital forensic tools to examine email servers, IP addresses, encrypted communication methods, and other technical data associated with such threats. Officials believe a centralised approach will improve coordination and help identify repeat offenders more quickly.
The Delhi Police has repeatedly appealed to the public to remain calm during such incidents while continuing to report suspicious activity immediately. Officials have emphasised that even hoax threats are treated seriously because of the potential risk to public safety and the disruption they cause. With the establishment of the new investigation cell, authorities hope to strengthen cyber monitoring capabilities and reduce the growing number of false bomb threats affecting critical institutions across the capital.
