Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground witnessed a historic gathering on Sunday as over 5 lakh people participated in a mass recital of the holy Bhagavad Gita. Organised by the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad, the event featured the resonant sound of drums and cymbals, creating an atmosphere of devotion and spiritual fervor across the sprawling venue. The recital drew participants from across the city, highlighting the enduring cultural and religious significance of the sacred text.
The mass recital aims to foster unity and collective devotion among Hindus, with Padma Shri awardee Kartik Maharaj, also known as Pradiptananda Maharaj, emphasising the scripture’s role as a unifying force. “The Bhagavad Gita is the most sacred granth of Hindus… it unites all Hindus. Saints from across the nation are participating in this programme to strengthen this bond,” he said, underlining the spiritual intent behind the massive gathering.
Political figures also highlighted the event’s cultural impact. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh described the recital as evidence of a “mass awakening of Hindus,” citing similar events in Siliguri, where 1 lakh devotees participated. Ghosh stated that such initiatives are crucial to preserving Hindu values and promoting unity through sacred traditions, asserting that the Gita serves as an ideal medium to bring people together.

Preparations for the spiritual event began a day earlier, with leaders such as West Bengal BJP head Sukanta Majumdar personally serving food to devotees arriving for the recital. This gesture aimed to foster community engagement and ensure participants could focus on the spiritual experience, reflecting the organisers’ commitment to hospitality and devotion.
The programme included continuous chanting and reading of the verses, with participants actively engaging in the sacred recitation. The sound of traditional musical instruments like drums and cymbals accompanied the readings, amplifying the collective spiritual energy of the gathering. The event also served as a platform for spiritual leaders from across India to interact and inspire devotees.
Organisers and attendees noted that such mass recitals play a pivotal role in preserving Hindu heritage while promoting unity across communities.
