Knee popping, cracking or clicking during squats is common and does not necessarily mean that the joints are damaged. Minor changes in how they move against one another can produce clicking or popping sounds without necessarily causing harm. However, the presence of other symptoms can change the picture. Knee popping accompanied by persistent pain, swelling, reduced movement or a sensation that the joint is giving way may indicate an issue that deserves medical evaluation.
Problems affecting cartilage or other structures within the knee can sometimes produce both audible sounds and physical symptoms. Knee crepitus is also frequently discussed in connection with osteoarthritis, a condition in which the tissues within a joint gradually undergo structural changes. Research has investigated whether people who experience knee noises are more likely to have or develop osteoarthritis. The presence of crepitus may be associated with changes in the knee, but the sound itself does not automatically mean that someone has arthritis. People who regularly perform squats can also pay attention to technique and training load. Repetitive movements performed with excessive resistance or without adequate recovery can place additional stress on the joints and surrounding tissues.

Gradually increasing exercise intensity, maintaining controlled movement and allowing sufficient recovery can help reduce unnecessary strain. It is also important not to assume that knee supports are required simply because a joint makes noise. Knee braces or supports may be useful for certain diagnosed conditions or specific sporting situations, but they are not automatically necessary for healthy people who experience painless crepitus. The appropriate approach depends on the individual's symptoms, physical examination and underlying condition. Medical attention becomes more important when popping is accompanied by significant or persistent pain, swelling, warmth, locking, instability or difficulty bearing weight.
A sudden change in symptoms following an injury should also be assessed by a healthcare professional. These signs can provide more meaningful information about joint health than the sound itself. For most people, an occasional or painless popping sensation while squatting is not necessarily a cause for concern. The key distinction is between the noise and the symptoms accompanying it. If the knees repeatedly pop but remain comfortable and function normally, the sound may simply be a feature of joint movement. If popping is accompanied by pain or other changes in knee function, however, professional assessment can help determine whether an underlying joint problem needs attention.
