Actor Rakul Preet Singh’s recent message about her fitness recovery has highlighted the importance of patience and a gradual approach while returning to exercise after an injury. After nearly a year of rehabilitation, the actor shared that healing cannot be rushed and that recovery follows its own timeline. Her experience has drawn attention to the need for people to avoid returning to intense workouts before their bodies are fully prepared.
Medical experts explain that recovery from injuries is not only about becoming free from pain. Even after symptoms improve, muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and joints may still require time to regain strength, flexibility and stability. Dr. Anup Khatri, Senior Consultant - Orthopedics at Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, noted that pain relief does not always indicate complete healing, and pushing the body too quickly can increase the chances of setbacks.
Returning to the gym too early after an injury can lead to several complications, including re-injury, muscle strains, joint stress, inflammation, delayed healing and reduced mobility. Experts caution that attempting to immediately resume a previous workout routine can put unnecessary pressure on recovering tissues and may extend the rehabilitation period instead of speeding it up.

Doctors recommend restarting physical activity with low-impact exercises such as walking, stretching and gentle movements before progressing towards strength training. Gradually increasing workout intensity allows the body to rebuild endurance and reduces the risk of further injury. Proper exercise technique and controlled progression are considered more important than quickly returning to previous fitness levels.
A safe recovery plan also involves factors beyond exercise, including adequate sleep, proper hydration, a protein-rich diet, consistent physiotherapy and following medical advice. People returning to workouts should pay attention to warning signs such as persistent pain, swelling, reduced range of motion, weakness, joint instability or unusual fatigue, as these may indicate that the body needs more recovery time.
There is no fixed timeline for returning to intense workouts, as recovery depends on the type and severity of injury, age, fitness levels, medical history and whether surgery was required. While minor injuries may heal within weeks, more complex conditions involving fractures, ligament damage or surgery may require months or longer. Rakul’s recovery journey serves as a reminder that rebuilding strength safely requires patience, consistency and respect for the body’s healing process.
