A historic milestone for Indian Railways is set for January 17, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the nation’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper trains from Malda, West Bengal. The overnight service will connect Howrah near Kolkata with Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati, covering a distance of roughly 1,000 km, offering a modern, fast, and comfortable alternative for long-distance travellers.
Unlike the existing daytime Vande Bharat trains with chair-car seating, this new version is a fully air-conditioned sleeper train, featuring three travel classes: 1AC, 2AC, and 3AC. Each berth is ergonomically designed, complemented by a state-of-the-art suspension system to ensure a smooth ride even at higher speeds. The train is built for a maximum speed of 180 kmph, though operational speeds will range between 120–130 kmph.
Hygiene and safety have been given top priority. The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains utilise advanced disinfectant technology capable of eliminating 99% of germs, provide fresh linens and towels for all passengers, and are equipped with the indigenous Kavach automatic protection system alongside comprehensive onboard surveillance. Automatic sliding doors enhance passenger safety, opening only at designated stations.

The train’s catering sets it apart from conventional rail services. Premium-quality meals are included in the ticket price, highlighting local culinary flavors. Passengers travelling from Kamakhya to Howrah will enjoy authentic Assamese cuisine, while the return journey will feature traditional Bengali dishes, reflecting regional culinary diversity.
Ticket prices for the inaugural Howrah-Kamakhya route are expected to be around ₹2,300 for 3AC, ₹3,000 for 2AC, and ₹3,600 for 1AC. Railway officials have indicated plans to expand the Vande Bharat Sleeper services to other major routes across India in the near future, aiming to revolutionize overnight rail travel with speed, comfort, and modern amenities.
This launch marks a significant step forward in India’s push for modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly rail services, combining cutting-edge technology with luxury and convenience on long-distance routes.
