A heart surgeon with 25 years of clinical experience has highlighted five key habits that parents should teach children early in life to support long-term physical and mental wellbeing. The advice, shared by Dr Jeremy London, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, focuses on building foundational lifestyle patterns during childhood that can shape health outcomes well into adulthood.
Dr London emphasised that children learn primarily through observation rather than instruction, making parental behaviour a critical influence on their long-term habits. He noted that routines established at home often become deeply embedded, forming the basis of how individuals approach diet, activity, sleep, and coping mechanisms later in life.
One of the key habits he warned against is vaping, which he described as a growing concern among young people. He said many adolescents wrongly assume e-cigarettes are harmless, but he has witnessed significant lung damage in young patients. He urged parents to educate children early about the risks associated with vaping and similar habits.

Dr London also highlighted the importance of teaching children to be comfortable with boredom, particularly in an era dominated by constant digital stimulation. Another major focus was conscious eating, with the surgeon stressing that children absorb dietary patterns from their household environment long before formal education about nutrition begins. He encouraged families to model healthy eating behaviours, as children are more likely to replicate what they consistently observe at the dining table.
Daily physical activity was also identified as a non-negotiable habit, with Dr London recommending that movement—whether through walking, sports, or unstructured play—become a consistent part of a child’s routine. He noted that consistency matters more than the type of activity when it comes to long-term health benefits.
Finally, he underscored the importance of protecting sleep, describing it as essential for brain development, emotional regulation, and overall physical health. According to him, quality sleep enables the body and mind to recover and develop properly, making it one of the most critical habits to establish early in life.
