Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged every Indian to join the ‘Your Money, Your Right’ movement and reclaim over ₹1 lakh crore lying unclaimed in banks, insurance companies, mutual funds and shares. In a detailed LinkedIn post, he revealed that Indian banks alone are holding ₹78,000 crore in dormant deposits, while ₹14,000 crore in insurance proceeds, ₹9,000 crore in unpaid dividends and ₹3,000 crore in mutual funds remain ownerless.
Describing the figures as “startling,” the Prime Minister emphasised that these amounts represent hard-earned savings of millions of families that have been forgotten due to address changes, un-updated nominees or simple oversight. He stressed that returning this money to rightful owners is both a financial and moral imperative for building a transparent and inclusive India.
To simplify retrieval, dedicated portals have been activated by the Reserve Bank of India (UPI for unclaimed deposits), IRDAI (insurance), SEBI (mutual funds) and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (dividends and shares). Citizens can search using PAN, account number or policy details and complete verification online or through facilitation camps being organised across the country.

Already, special camps have been held in 477 districts, including remote rural districts, resulting in nearly ₹2,000 crore being returned to claimants within weeks of the October launch. The government has directed banks and financial institutions to proactively contact customers and has deployed district-level teams to assist senior citizens and low-literacy families.
Modi called for immediate action, asking citizens to check for forgotten fixed deposits of deceased parents, lapsed insurance policies, unclaimed shares from demat accounts or dividends from old investments. “Your money is yours. Let us ensure it returns to you and becomes a new opportunity,” he wrote, urging people to visit the portals or nearest camp before the window closes on pending claims.
