Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday called for stronger ties among countries of the Global South and put forward five initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation among BRICS members and emerging markets during the second day of the BRICS 2026 Summit in New Delhi. Xi urged countries in the grouping to strengthen economic engagement, maintain open and mutually beneficial cooperation, safeguard industrial and supply chains and work towards building a large, integrated market to support development.

Addressing the summit, Xi said BRICS countries should deepen cooperation with emerging markets and developing economies while promoting greater solidarity among nations of the Global South. His remarks came as BRICS continues to position itself as a platform for cooperation among major emerging economies and as membership expands the bloc's engagement with a wider group of developing countries. Xi emphasised that closer coordination could help members respond to challenges affecting economic growth and international cooperation.

One of the key areas highlighted by the Chinese president was the need to maintain open and mutually beneficial economic cooperation. Xi called on BRICS countries to strengthen partnerships rather than allow barriers to undermine economic engagement. He also stressed the importance of safeguarding stable industrial and supply chains, an issue that has gained significance amid disruptions to international trade and growing competition among major economies. Stable production and supply networks, he said, would provide a stronger foundation for economic development and cooperation.

Xi also put forward the idea of building a large and integrated market to encourage greater economic cooperation among BRICS members and other emerging economies. A more integrated market, according to the proposal, could help expand trade and economic links while creating additional opportunities for development. The initiative reflects the emphasis placed by BRICS countries on strengthening economic ties and increasing cooperation among developing nations.

Beyond economic issues, Xi used his address to call for a rules-based international order in which global rules are shaped by all countries. He argued that international rules should not be determined by a limited group of nations and instead should reflect broader participation. His comments highlighted China's emphasis on giving developing countries a greater role in global governance and decision-making, particularly on matters affecting international economic and political affairs.

The five initiatives outlined by Xi centred on stronger engagement with emerging markets, open and mutually beneficial cooperation, stable industrial and supply chains, greater market integration and a more inclusive international order. Taken together, the proposals presented his vision of BRICS as a platform for closer Global South coordination on economic and international issues. Xi's address also reinforced China's call for developing countries to play a larger role in shaping global rules and institutions while expanding practical cooperation among emerging economies.
