Union Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced a series of stringent measures to combat cyber fraud during the Lok Sabha’s Question Hour on Wednesday. Highlighting the government’s proactive stance, Scindia revealed the establishment of the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), which integrates 620 institutions, including 570 banks, police departments from 36 states, and investigative agencies, to enhance coordination in tackling cybercrime. He also noted a remarkable 97% reduction in international spoofed calls, underscoring the efficacy of recent initiatives.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has deployed advanced tools, including the Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) software, which categorizes and shares data on fraudulent individuals with banks to block suspicious transactions. Additionally, an indigenous Artificial Intelligence and big data tool, ASTR, has identified and disconnected over 82 lakh mobile connections obtained under false identities. Based on reports from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, DoT has also disconnected 3.57 lakh mobile numbers, primarily from Rajasthan, Bihar, and West Bengal.
To prevent misuse of telecom resources, DoT has strengthened its Know Your Customer (KYC) framework, mandating KYC for business connections and SIM swaps. In response to a supplementary question, Scindia shared optimistic updates on the revival of state-owned BSNL and MTNL, announcing plans for a comprehensive business strategy following a recent review meeting. These measures reflect the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens from cyber threats while bolstering the telecommunications sector.
