Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse by flagging off a large anti-drug awareness run along Chennai's Marina Beach on Friday morning before joining hundreds of participants in the event. The initiative formed part of the state government's campaign to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage a drug-free society, particularly among young people.
Dressed in tracks, sneakers and sunglasses, the Chief Minister surprised participants by taking part in the run after formally flagging it off. Wearing a white T-shirt carrying the slogan "Start Run, Stop Drugs", Vijay ran alongside students, youth and other participants, drawing loud cheers from the crowd gathered at Marina Beach. The event witnessed a massive turnout, with long stretches of Marina Road filled with runners.
The awareness run was organised as part of the state's observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Aerial visuals from the venue showed thousands of participants joining the campaign, highlighting strong public support for the government's efforts to promote awareness about the harmful effects of narcotics and substance abuse.

The event came a day after Chief Minister Vijay launched Tamil Nadu's official anti-drug anthem as part of a broader campaign to educate the public and mobilise communities against drug abuse. The anthem and the awareness run are among several initiatives planned by the state government to encourage preventive action, especially among school and college students.
Officials said the campaign aims to strengthen public participation in the fight against drug abuse through awareness programmes, educational initiatives and community engagement. By personally participating in the run, Vijay sought to reinforce the message that combating drug abuse requires collective responsibility and active involvement from citizens across all sections of society.
The anti-drug awareness run concluded successfully amid enthusiastic participation and heightened security arrangements along the Marina Beach stretch. The state government is expected to continue organising similar outreach programmes across Tamil Nadu as part of its ongoing campaign to discourage substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles among the youth.
