India on Thursday appointed seasoned diplomat Vikram Doraiswami as its next ambassador to China, signaling a continued effort to stabilize and rebuild bilateral relations between the two countries. The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs, which confirmed that Doraiswami will assume his new role shortly.
A 1992-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Doraiswami is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Over the years, he has held several key diplomatic assignments and is regarded as an experienced figure in India’s foreign policy establishment. His appointment to Beijing is being viewed as a strategic move given his extensive diplomatic background.
Doraiswami will replace Pradeep Kumar Rawat as India’s envoy to China. Rawat had been serving in the role during a particularly challenging period in bilateral relations, marked by tensions along the disputed border. The leadership transition comes at a time when both nations are cautiously working toward improving engagement.

Relations between India and China have remained strained since the prolonged military standoff in eastern Ladakh, which began over four years ago. The situation significantly impacted diplomatic and economic ties, prompting multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks aimed at disengagement and de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The appointment of a senior and experienced diplomat like Doraiswami is expected to play a key role in advancing dialogue and fostering stability in the relationship. His tenure will likely focus on maintaining communication channels, addressing outstanding border issues, and exploring avenues for cooperation where possible.
The move underscores India’s intent to remain engaged with China diplomatically, even as both countries navigate complex geopolitical and security challenges in the region. Observers note that sustained diplomatic efforts will be crucial in restoring a degree of normalcy in bilateral ties.
