Actor Shefali Shah has reflected on her first marriage to actor Harsh Chhaya in her memoir-in-essays, The Audacity of Being, saying that people are often unprepared for the possibility of a marriage ending. Without naming or blaming anyone, Shah has written about the experience of watching a relationship fall apart and the emotional process of dealing with the failure of a marriage.
Speaking about the subject, Shah said marriage does not always turn out as people expect and that individuals may have no choice but to deal with the circumstances when a relationship begins to break down. She described her writing as an attempt to discuss the experience respectfully rather than revisit the specific details of what happened in her own marriage.
Shah said that nobody is prepared for divorce when entering a marriage. In her book, she explained that she was not interested in identifying individuals or detailing the events of her relationship, but instead wanted to examine what happens when a marriage reaches a point where it can no longer continue.

The actor also addressed the process of recognising that a marriage is falling apart. She said there was nothing she needed to hide and that she had written about the subject with respect. Rather than presenting the memoir as an account of blame, Shah focused on the broader experience of a relationship reaching its breaking point and what that can mean for the people involved.
The memoir goes beyond Shah’s first marriage and explores several personal and professional aspects of her life. The book discusses love and its challenges, divorce and remarriage, friendships and community, as well as the experience of ageing as a Bollywood actor. Shah also writes about creative self-doubt, body image and the challenges associated with parenting.
Shah’s reflections offer a broader look at relationships and the realities that can emerge after the expectations surrounding marriage change. By choosing not to name or detail the circumstances of her first marriage, she has instead used the experience to explore the emotional impact of a relationship ending. Her comments also highlight the central theme of accepting and dealing with difficult changes when a marriage does not unfold as expected.
