Comedian and content creator Samay Raina has revealed that he feared financial ruin in the aftermath of the controversy surrounding his show India’s Got Latent, saying he worried about going “bankrupt” like Amitabh Bachchan during the actor’s well-documented financial crisis in the 1990s.
Raina said the fallout from the row had immediate financial consequences, including the loss of brand partnerships and sponsorships that had been tied to the show. He added that the situation forced him to dip into personal savings, even breaking fixed deposits to manage expenses during the uncertain period.
The comedian explained that the controversy escalated quickly, impacting not just his public image but also the commercial viability of his projects. With sponsors pulling out and collaborations being paused, he faced mounting pressure to sustain his work and team without steady revenue streams.

Drawing a parallel with Amitabh Bachchan’s financial struggles before his career resurgence, Raina said the comparison reflected the level of anxiety he experienced rather than a direct equivalence. Bachchan had faced significant debt in the late 1990s before rebuilding his career through television and films, a story often cited as one of resilience in the entertainment industry.
Raina noted that the experience served as a wake-up call about the volatility of digital content careers, where income streams can be disrupted rapidly by controversies or shifting audience sentiment. He emphasized the importance of financial planning and diversification for creators navigating similar risks.
While the immediate crisis appears to have stabilised, Raina said the episode left a lasting impact on his approach to work and finances. The incident highlights broader challenges faced by digital creators in managing reputational risks and sustaining long-term financial security in an increasingly competitive and unpredictable media landscape.
