Actress Rhea Chakraborty has reflected on the 28 days she spent in judicial custody in 2020, sharing some of the unexpected lessons and experiences from her time in prison. Speaking during a conversation with comedian Tanmay Bhat, she recalled how her perception of people inside jail differed from what she had expected.
Rhea said she found the women she met in prison to be more compassionate than she had anticipated. She noted that there was little hierarchy among the inmates and that everyone was treated equally. She also recalled how women in the prison would sing and dance to pass the time, while food and conversations helped create moments of normalcy during an otherwise difficult period.
The actress was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau on September 8, 2020, in connection with a drugs investigation linked to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. She was accused of procuring drugs for him and was granted bail on October 7, 2020. Her arrest and subsequent time in custody became a major focus of public and media attention at the time.

During the conversation, Rhea also spoke about some of the lighter memories from her time in custody. She recalled the women preparing thecha, a spicy Maharashtrian preparation, and joked about writing a book based on her experiences. She even came up with the playful title “Chudail ka badla” when asked what she might call it.
Rhea also discussed how her life changed after the investigations surrounding Sushant Singh Rajput's death. The CBI filed a closure report in March 2025, concluding that Rajput's death was a suicide. Rhea recalled travelling abroad with her parents after getting her passport back and said it felt unusual to pass through immigration without being stopped or questioned.
She further recalled how people in the film industry sometimes became noticeably serious when she entered a room following her release. Rhea is now appearing in Karan Johar's reality show The Traitors 2, which is streaming on Prime Video.
