Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s journey from a film superstar to one of Tamil Nadu’s most formidable political leaders is nothing short of extraordinary. On her birth anniversary, we take a closer look at the defining moments that cemented her legacy as the "Iron Lady" of Tamil Nadu.
Born on February 24, 1948, in Mysore (now in Karnataka), Jayalalithaa grew up in a family with strong cultural roots. Despite excelling academically, circumstances led her to pursue acting, following in the footsteps of her mother, Sandhya, who was also a film actress.
In 1961, she made her film debut in 1961 as a child artist in the English-language film Epistle, but her big break came in 1965 when she starred opposite MGR.
In 1965, she made her Tamil film debut in Aayirathil Oruvan alongside M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). Her on-screen chemistry with MGR became legendary, and she went on to act in over 140 films across Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada cinema, becoming one of South India’s most celebrated actresses.
In 1982, her political career began when MGR, her mentor and AIADMK founder, introduced her to politics. As the party’s propaganda secretary, she impressed with her speeches and mass appeal.
In 1987, after MGR’s death, she faced intense opposition within the party.
In 1989, she was publicly humiliated in the Tamil Nadu Assembly—a moment that fuelled her determination to lead.
In 1991, she became Tamil Nadu’s first woman Chief Minister, ushering in welfare-driven governance. Despite controversies and corruption charges, she made spectacular comebacks, winning five terms in office. Her popular schemes—Amma Canteens, free laptops, gold for marriages, and free rice—earned her the title "Amma" (Mother) of Tamil Nadu.
She was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, India from 1991 to 1996, 2001-2006, 2011 to 2016. For a brief period in September 2014 to July 2015 and from September 2001 to March 2002, her party person O. Paneerselvam was the Chief Minister of the state.
In May 2016, she was sworn-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the sixth time.
On December 5, 2016, she passed away leaving a political void. Known for her authoritative leadership and unwavering resilience, Jayalalithaa commanded deep loyalty, ruling AIADMK with an iron grip. From a beloved actress to Tamil Nadu’s Iron Lady, Jayalalithaa’s life remains a testament to grit, intelligence, and perseverance. And her legacy endures.
