Shwetha Menon has blamed the previous leadership of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for the organisation's financial difficulties after resigning as its President along with her entire executive committee. The actor, who became the first woman to head the influential body, stepped down following a tense annual general body meeting held in Kochi on Sunday.
Menon, along with all 17 members of her executive committee, also relinquished her primary membership in AMMA. Speaking to reporters after her resignation, she said the financial issues that surfaced during her tenure were inherited from the previous committee led by Actor Mohanlal. According to her, her team merely uncovered and highlighted the problems rather than creating them.
The actor alleged that the earlier committee had maintained inaccurate accounts and handled a significant portion of the association's finances through cash transactions instead of documented channels. She claimed this practice had continued for months, making it difficult for the current administration to present clean and transparent financial records.

Defending her committee's performance, Menon said her team faced challenges due to the absence of a functioning treasurer but nevertheless worked to identify and report irregularities. She maintained that every discrepancy discovered during their review was brought to the attention of members and recorded appropriately. According to her, the executive committee made efforts to improve accountability despite inheriting a flawed financial system.
Menon also rejected suggestions that she had served merely as a symbolic leader within the organisation. Stating that she would not be "someone's play doll," she asserted her independence and defended the decisions taken during her tenure. While expressing relief at stepping away from the committee, she said she sympathised with most of her former colleagues, though she appeared to reserve criticism for a few members.
The resignations have added a new chapter to the ongoing challenges facing AMMA, one of the most prominent associations in the Malayalam film industry. Menon's allegations regarding financial management are likely to intensify scrutiny of the organisation's governance practices and could prompt renewed calls for greater transparency and accountability within the body.
