Sebastian Stan, renowned for his role in Thunderbolts, is set to lead Frankenstein in Romania, an innovative feature film helmed by celebrated Romanian director Radu Jude. The announcement came during the Locarno Film Festival, where Jude is currently showcasing his latest work, Dracula, inspired by Bram Stoker’s iconic Gothic horror novel.
Jude, whose previous films include critically acclaimed titles such as Aferim! (2015), I Do Not Care if We Go Down in History as Barbarians (2018), and Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (2023), revealed the project in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m writing a film now. It’s a Frankenstein film in Romania. Frankenstein in Romania, it’s going to be called,” Jude stated.
The director and Stan, a Romanian-born actor who relocated to the United States with his mother, had previously discussed collaborating. Jude later pitched Stan a concept for the Frankenstein story, which intertwines the historical existence of a secret CIA prison in Romania with the legendary tale of the Frankenstein monster. Stan, captivated by the idea, will portray both Victor Frankenstein and his monstrous creation in the film.
