Actress Kathryn Hahn has confirmed that she will portray the villain Mother Gothel in Tangled’s upcoming live-action remake being developed by The Walt Disney Company. The announcement was made through a playful video posted on Kathryn's Instagram account, where she revealed the casting while wearing a T-shirt featuring multiple images of the animated antagonist.
In the video, Kathryn joked about only recently learning the meaning of the abbreviation “OOTD,” which stands for “Outfit of the Day.” The reveal also referenced her Instagram handle, @motherhahn, which has been her username since she joined the platform. In the original story, Mother Gothel serves as the central antagonist who imprisons Princess Rapunzel in a secluded tower to exploit the magical healing powers of her long golden hair.
The live-action adaptation will star Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, the charming thief who eventually becomes Rapunzel’s ally on her journey beyond the tower. The project will be directed by Michael Gracey, known for helming The Greatest Showman.

The screenplay is being written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose previous work includes Do Revenge and Someone Great. Production will be overseen by Kristin Burr through Burr! Productions, with Lucy Kitada serving as executive producer. Earlier reports had linked the role of Mother Gothel to Scarlett Johansson, but scheduling conflicts reportedly prevented her from taking the part.
The original Tangled was released in 2010 and directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. The film became a major box-office success, earning more than $590 million worldwide and featuring voice performances from Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider, and Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel.
Inspired by the classic Rapunzel tale from the Brothers Grimm, the film also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “I See the Light,” written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. The upcoming remake forms part of Disney’s broader strategy to reimagine its animated classics in live-action format, alongside projects such as the live-action adaptation of Moana starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga'aia.
