Tom Cherones, the acclaimed Director and Producer best known for his work on Seinfeld, passed away at the age of 86 at his home in Florence, Oregon. Cherones had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for several years. His contributions to television, particularly in shaping the comedic tone of one of the most celebrated sitcoms in history, earned him widespread recognition and six Emmy nominations.
Cherones directed and produced 85 episodes of Seinfeld, including the memorable second episode, The Stakeout, released in May 1990. He shared an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1993 alongside the show’s creators, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David. Cherones even made a cameo appearance in episode four, The Pilot. His direction was credited with helping Seinfeld maintain its fresh and innovative storytelling during its early seasons.
Born on September 11, 1939, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Cherones earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of New Mexico and a master’s in telecommunications from the University of Alabama. He also served four years as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. Cherones began his television career producing and directing educational programs for WQED in Pittsburgh before moving to Hollywood in 1975, where he worked as a production manager for General Hospital.

Before Seinfeld, Cherones honed his directorial skills on shows like Babes in the Woods in 1986. Following Seinfeld, he continued to direct several popular television series, including NewsRadio, Welcome Back Kotter, Caroline in the City, Annie McGuire, and Ellen. His work was known for sharp comedic timing and strong character-driven storytelling.
Cherones left Seinfeld after its fifth season, explaining that the show’s creators wanted fresh perspectives to keep the series dynamic. He remained a respected figure in television, celebrated for his ability to balance humor with narrative sophistication. Cherones’ legacy endures as a defining influence on American sitcoms, shaping the careers of countless actors and writers.
