The 2025 Oscars reunited the iconic pairing of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan from the 1989 smash hit ‘When Harry Met Sally’ for the final award of the night—Best Picture.
Host Conan O’Brien introduced the duo with high praise, calling Crystal “the greatest Oscar host ever”. The nine-time Academy Awards emcee wasted no time getting laughs. “It’s great to be back at this show, I used to work here,” he quipped.
Ryan played along, asking, “When was the first time?”
“Nine tuxedos ago,” Crystal replied, to roaring applause. He went on to note that his first Oscars hosting gig was exactly 35 years ago this month.
With the anticipation for Best Picture building, Ryan suggested, “Let’s cut to the chase.”
Crystal then delivered a line that had the audience smiling with nostalgia: “Because when you have a chance to be an Oscar winner for the rest of your life, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
The moment was a clever nod to When Harry Met Sally, in which Harry famously declares his love with the line: “I came here tonight because when you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Crystal, known for his sharp comedic timing, has been a staple of Oscars history. His first time hosting in 1990 set the bar for humour and showmanship, making him one of the Academy’s most beloved hosts.
The Oscars reunion came just weeks after the duo shared the screen again—this time in a Hellmann’s Super Bowl ad. It may have taken 36 years and a mayonnaise commercial, but at long last, Harry and Sally were back together.
