BTS have announced that they will not submit their music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, despite being widely regarded as potential frontrunners. The decision was shared by all seven members—RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—through a joint message posted on their Instagram Stories on Wednesday. In the statement, the globally renowned K-pop group said they wanted their music to be appreciated without being defined by language or regional categories.
"We have decided not to submit to the Grammys this year," the group said in the statement. Explaining their decision, BTS added that they hope "music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language." The members concluded the message by expressing gratitude to their global fanbase, ARMY, and everyone who has supported them. Their announcement comes months before the 2027 Grammy Awards, scheduled to take place on February 7, 2027, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with nominations set to be announced on November 16, 2026.
The decision has drawn significant attention because it follows the Recording Academy's introduction of a new Asian Pop Music Performance category for the 2027 Grammy Awards. The category is intended to recognize artistic excellence in Asian pop music, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, and requires eligible entries to make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. While many fans welcomed the move as a step toward greater recognition for Asian artists, others questioned whether musicians should be categorized based on language or geographical origin.

BTS are the first major international act to publicly confirm that they will not participate under the new submission framework. Given the group's longstanding global success and previous Grammy nominations, they were widely expected to be among the strongest contenders in the newly introduced category. Their decision has sparked discussions across social media, with many fans interpreting the statement as a call for music to be judged on artistic merit rather than regional identity.
The announcement comes during a landmark year for BTS following the completion of all seven members' mandatory military service in South Korea. The group recently reunited for full-scale activities and released Arirang, their first full-group album in several years. According to the information provided, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while its lead single, Swim, topped the Billboard Hot 100. BTS are also preparing to continue their Arirang World Tour, with performances set to resume on August 1 with two concerts at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, marking the next phase of their highly anticipated global comeback.
