Yami Gautam has responded to online criticism after social media users noticed that she had “liked” an Instagram reel that appeared to mock Kriti Sanon following her recent Best Actress award win. Addressing the controversy, Yami clarified that the interaction was unintentional and emphasised that she had no intention of criticising or targeting a fellow actor.
The controversy began after a reel circulated widely on social media combining footage of Kriti celebrating her award victory with an older interview clip of Yami discussing recognition in the film industry. Users quickly noticed that Yami’s account had liked the video, triggering speculation online that she might have been indirectly reacting to Kriti’s win.
Responding to the discussion, Yami issued a public clarification explaining that she receives a large number of tags and notifications on social media every day. According to the actor, such high volumes of activity can sometimes lead to accidental interactions, including unintended likes on posts that appear in tagged notifications.

“It has come to my notice that I apparently ‘liked’ a reel that is condescending toward another actor,” Yami wrote in her statement. She added that the action “was definitely not done consciously” and suggested that the engagement may have happened accidentally while scrolling through multiple tagged posts related to award function references.
Yami also dismissed suggestions that the incident was part of a publicity effort. Stressing her long-standing approach toward her career, she said she has never relied on negative publicity or social media controversies to gain attention and prefers to focus on her work instead.
Reflecting on the broader online reaction, Yami noted that minor social media actions can often escalate quickly in the era of viral content and click-driven discussions. She expressed hope that audiences and media platforms would consider her professional reputation and past conduct, reiterating that she remains committed to maintaining dignity in the industry while concentrating on her projects rather than online speculation.
