Veteran actor Sudesh Kumar passed away at the age of 95 on May 1 after suffering a brain stroke. He died at Breach Candy Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for nearly two weeks following the medical emergency. His death marks the end of a long career spanning several decades in Indian Cinema and Theatre.
According to family sources, the actor suffered a brain stroke around mid-April and was admitted to the hospital on April 20. He remained under medical care until April 30 before being discharged and shifted home, where an ICU setup was arranged to continue his treatment. Despite continued care and monitoring, his condition did not improve, and he passed away the following day. His final rites and prayer meet are scheduled to be held in Mumbai.
Sudesh Kumar is survived by his wife Jaya and daughter Mishika. Born on March 17, 1931, he initially pursued a science degree from Elphinstone College but eventually chose to follow his passion for acting, despite his family’s wish for him to enter the medical profession. His early artistic journey began with Prithviraj Kapoor’s well-known theatre group, which helped shape his foundation in performance arts.

He rose to prominence in Hindi Cinema with the tragic romantic film Saranga, where he played the lead role and gained widespread recognition. Over the years, he appeared in several notable films, including Chhoti Bahen, Bharosa, and Khandan, where he established himself as a dependable supporting actor. His performances were also appreciated in South Indian cinema, where he contributed to a range of successful productions.
Apart from acting, Sudesh Kumar also ventured into film production later in his career. One of his notable projects as a producer was Jaan Hatheli Pe. His work across acting and production reflected a long-standing association with the film industry, spanning both mainstream and regional cinema.
The veteran actor’s prayer meet is scheduled for May 4, 2026, at FPH Banquets Hall in Mumbai. Colleagues from the film industry and admirers are expected to attend to pay their final respects to an actor whose career left a lasting mark on Indian cinema.
